This week's Tales of Tyria featured a lengthy discussion on how to stream and record GW2 footage. We wanted to find out how many people have an interest in this area.

I feel that if a channel had both light humor in some videos and some expert appeal in others it would cover the market well since many channels are going down the road of humor (which is generally appealing) and guide/teaching.

Yeah I have to agree, expert appeal will be a big thing to have in your videos although you cannot forget about humor. It is one thing to watch a great video but If the voice over is both boring and void of any real indepth explanations then it will suffer.

For you streamers, this program hides all designated windows and processes from screen capture programs.
It's very useful for hiding windows you dont want to show the stream, whether it be because you have 1 monitor, or just incase you need to start a program, which pops up on the "streaming" screen.
It was made for Starcraft 2, but is very useful for general streaming.

I plan on watching some streams, but probably I'll watch youtube video guides mostly. When I'm watching streams, I look for humor and a decent knowledge of the game. Humor, personality, and good audience interaction is the most important quality for me though; if it lacks those, I turn it off. When I'm watching youtube videos I look for good teaching and very high game knowledge so I can learn something.

that episode was pretty amazing for all the information and expert advice given selflessly.
i personally like a caster/streamer/host that displays a humble mastery of their subject material (or knows when to defer to an 'expert' & play the role of moderator) and has a personality i enjoy listening to. a good example of the prior, imo, would be day9 and apok from gw1 gvg vids. i'd say bridger is getting close to that level also. for personality, it's very subjective. i personally liked ryan from relicsoforr but what matters more to me is the synergy of the panel and how well the personalities balance (ie malchior vs sabre/izari; free vs bridger, etc)
btw, i like eyedrops' voice.

Ill likely just record and post to youtube because my internet connection doesn't have enough upload speed to actually handle a stream too. My house is out in the boonies! Which I actually love (I dont like people in RL lol) but makes for semi sucky interwebs =D

Oh man this reminds me of biomedical exams back in first year where everything seems right. Can I choose all of the above?
Well.....hmm.....apparently I can

This may come across as a dumb question, but bear with me: I'm 35 (i.e. old) and need help. Why would I want to watch a stream when I could be playing?
I found the last episode very interesting even though I have no intention of streaming or recording video myself. I especially liked the part about board games at the end (what, no mention of Dominion?!?). But I kept finding myself wondering why I would want to stream or watch a stream. I mean, I know from LoL that watching good streamers can help you improve your game. But if I don't plan on playing competitively (I really odn't have the time to dedicate to it, for example) what else can I get from it? I came to the conclusion that it must be a social thing with the younger generation of gamers or something because I'd sooner just play.
So yeah, go easy on me; this is a serious question and I'm very curious. You guys were very much encouraging everyone to go out there and stream so I want to know what you or I would get from it.

Its similar to why people make youtube videos. The only difference is the fact that its live and some lack of editing that would be found in recorded videos.
The 3 types of streamers are the reasons people want to stream. There are people that want to entertain others. Some than want to educate others. And some want to show high level play. People want to watch streams if they cant play the game, are interested in learning about a game, want to be entertained, or simple watch high level play.
Thats a fairly simple way to explain it.

I will be streaming and capturing to make videos for Youtube. It's just another addition to the game for me.
I have a good system with three monitors and a good upload. It lets me read chat and do other crap while playing. Sometimes I show my webcam with it, but I dunno why someone would want to see my ugly mug or my fat cat laying on my chest... but then again, they may like that. /shrug
I watch streams at work for the most part. It passes the time.

Some people watch streams as a way of social interaction. On Twitch, for instance, there are chat rooms for each stream, and some people visit them every day to chat with their friends and the streamers. Often when someone is bored with a particular game, they will still watch streams of it because they are familiar with that particular game and can associate with others who have played, or are playing, that game as well.

Thanks for the responses. All of that makes sense, though none of it really clarifies things for me. I guess it'll just a big mystery up there with why people like Twitter and tablets. :-D
