The show, in which Laurie plays a brilliant but troubled American doctor with a gift for unraveling medical mysteries, has received numerous awards and garnered a loyal following on both sides of the Atlantic.
The former Blackadder star is one of the programme's executive producers and said in a joint statement that the decision to end the series was a "painful" one.
"After much deliberation, the producers of House MD have decided that this season of the show, the 8th, should be the last.
"By April this year they will have completed 177 episodes, which is about 175 more than anyone expected back in 2004," the statement said.
The decision was partly motivated by a desire to preserve the main character, Dr Gregory House, as an "enigmatic creature".
I'm saddened by this. While it may not have been as well written, I've watched every season of this show and will miss it. I think Hugh Laurie is about the only person who could have pulled this character off with such talent.
